A Scottish restaurant has been named the best in the UK, beating London’s culinary elite.
The Andrew Fairlie restaurant in Gleneagles has been ranked number one on the annual top 100 list produced by the prestigious Harden’s restaurant guide.
The only Scottish restaurant to hold two Michelin stars, it has been hailed as “a memory to be treasured” and praised for luxurious ingredients prepared with “impeccable skill and creativity” and attentive staff who are “knowledgeable in every way”.
Andrew Fairlie passed away at the age of 55 in January 2019, more than a decade after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

His restaurant is now run by his two longtime colleagues, Stephen McLaughlin and Dale Dewsbury, and serves a signature dish of house-smoked Scottish lobster with lemon and herb butter.
Diners can expect to pay £155 for the Menu Dégustation (tasting menu), £250 if you pair it with wines.
Herald restaurant critic Ron McKenna said in 2018: “One visit is all it takes to see how wide the chasm is between one and two Michelin stars. A must try, even if only once.”

Stevie McLaughlin, head chef, said he was “extremely proud” of reaching the top spot on the list.
He said: “While it is always an honor to receive praise for the restaurant, the fact that Harden’s Top 100 is led by a restaurant is a special honor and a particular testament to the hard work of the entire team to ensure that every guest has the very best experience. possible when they dine with us.
“This time, four years ago, we were dealing with the terrible loss of our wonderful friend and mentor, Andrew Fairlie, and committed to upholding his incredible legacy.
“I am extremely proud that we are here today winning these fantastic awards.
“People knew Andrew as an advocate of good food and service, and that spirit remains the same.

He added: “We have a fantastic and talented team who are invested and remain motivated to maintain – and exceed – the standards set by Chef Andrew.”
Edinburgh has emerged as the city in the UK with the most top 500 listings outside of London, with no less than 17 restaurants making it into the elite ranks.
Scottish restaurants took eight of the top 100 spots with The Kitchin, led by Tom Kitchin in Leith, ranked fifth in the UK, climbing 18 places in one year.
It was followed by Martin Wishart Restaurant in Edinburgh (14) and The Little Chartroom, Edinburgh (31).
Glasgow’s Cail Bruich, led by chef Lorna McNee, who has won the city’s first Michelin star in 18 years, was ranked 50th on the list and fifth in Scotland.

Graeme Cheevers’ Unalome in Finnieston was ranked 68 in Harden’s top 100.
The restaurant received its first Michelin star just 18 months after opening and offers guests an affordable lunch menu as well as more savory dinner menus.

The Peat Inn in Cupar, run by Geoffrey and Katherine Smeddle and The Cellar in Anstruther also made the top 100.
Head chef Billy Boyter grew up in a house by the harbor in Cellardyke, just five minutes from the restaurant’s door, and represented Scotland at both the Culinary World Cup and the Culinary Olympics in his youth.
London restaurants took up most of the top 100, with Evelyn’s Table at The Blue Posts, led by Chef James Goodyear, in second place.
The UK capital’s most famous hotel, The Ritz, was listed as the 91st best restaurant, five places ahead of Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck Restaurant, which has three Michelin stars, while celebrity favorite Nobu was in 40th place.
Harden’s Best UK Restaurants 2023 poll is based on 30,000 reports from a survey of 3,000 customers.

Restaurants at all price levels are listed from street food vendors to the country’s most ambitious restaurants, with 2,800 restaurants listed in total.
Scotland currently has 11 Michelin-starred restaurants, including Loch Bay, Isle of Eriska Hotel and Condita.
Peter Harden, co-founder of Harden’s, said: “Sadly, Andrew Fairlie may no longer be with us, but his spirit lives on in this eponymous restaurant.
“Achieving the No. 1 spot this year is a huge credit to his longtime lieutenants, Head Chef Stephen McLaughlin and General Manager Dale Dewsbury.
“It’s been an outstanding year for Scotland’s representation in Harden’s Top 100 as a whole, with restaurants in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perthshire and Fife featuring.
“This, together with Edinburgh’s fantastic placement as the second most listed city in the Top 500, is a testament to the excellent quality and value offered by the country’s food scene.”
